Dhaka: All spadework done, the government is going to sign an agreement with Russia soon for establishing country’s first-ever nuclear power plant to generate much-needed electricity.

A delegation led by State Minister for Science and ICT Yeafesh Osman will leave Dhaka on May 18 for Moscow to ink the deal.

Atomic Energy Commission member Dr. Farid Uddin, Science and ICT Secretary Abdur Rauf Hawlader and Director of Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant Dr Shawkat Akbar will be the other delegation members.
 
Russian Ambassador in Bangladesh Gennady P. Trotsenko met the State minister at his office here Wednesday to discuss the Russia tour of the Bangladesh team. The state minister confirmed the envoy about the date of his visit.  
 
Dr. Shawkat told Banglanews that the field of cooperation, including funding, protocol system and fixing megawatts, would be mentioned in the accord.  

“The agreement is in the draft stage and will be sent to the Prime Minister soon. It will be finalised as per her instructions,” he said.

Bangladesh and Russia signed a MoU and a protocol in October 2009 to install a nuclear power plant, as the country has long been reeling from nagging power crisis.
