Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, recorded the worst air quality in the world on Saturday (Feb 22) morning, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 184 at 8:34 am, according to the AQI index.
This level classifies the air as “unhealthy,” posing significant health risks to residents.
Kampala (Uganda), Krakow (Poland), and Kathmandu (Nepal) followed closely behind with AQI scores of 178, 169, and 168, respectively.
The AQI in Bangladesh is determined by five key pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka’s air quality often worsens during winter and sees slight improvement in the monsoon season.
According to the WHO, air pollution causes around seven million deaths worldwide each year. Dhaka’s ongoing battle with dirty air is a serious health concern.
