No rape occurred during bus robbery, says Police Super

The superintendent of police in Tangail, Md Mizanur Rahman, has said that while a robbery and incidents of harassment took place on a Rajshahi-bound bus on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, no rape occurred.

Speaking at a press briefing at his office on Saturday morning, Rahman said that during the robbery, members of the gang snatched chains from the necks and earrings from the ears of two or three female passengers, leading to harassment. 

However, he asserted that no rape took place.

Meanwhile, within 14 hours of the case being filed, police arrested three members of an inter-district robbery gang in connection with the incident.

The three suspects were apprehended by Tangail district detectives on Friday night in Savar, Dhaka. They were identified as Md Shahidul Islam alias Muhit (30) from Lautara village in Daulatpur Sadar, Manikganj; Md Sabuj (30) from Ramkrishnapur village in Jajira, Shariatpur; and Md Sharifuzzaman (28) from Tangenda village in Savar, Dhaka.

Authorities recovered three stolen mobile phones, a knife, and Tk 29,370 from the suspects.

Rahman further stated that police are actively searching for the remaining culprits. The arrested suspects have been presented before the court with a five-day remand request for interrogation.

Additionally, Assistant Sub-Inspector Atiquzzaman of Mirzapur police station has been temporarily suspended for negligence in duty related to the incident.
