The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed a hearing for Tuesday (February 25) to review the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam in a crimes against humanity case.
The hearing was set by the Appellate Division led by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam on Sunday (February 23).
Azharul Islam’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Monir, confirmed the date, while Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman presented the case in court.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Monir were also present during the proceedings.
The Attorney General informed the court that Azharul Islam's review petition was previously scheduled for February 20, but the hearing was not held on that date. The matter was then rescheduled for Tuesday.
In January, the Appellate Division had adjourned the hearing to February 20, as one judge was absent from the bench. The review petition follows the upholding of Azharul Islam’s death sentence by the Appellate Division in October 2019.
The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azharul Islam to death in December 2014 for his involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
