A Kishoreganj court has sentenced 13 people to life imprisonment for the murder of farmer Monir Mia.

The order was issued on Wednesday (February 26) by Senior District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Nurul Amin Biplob.

The convicts are Mojibur Rahman Mir, 65, Habibur Rahman, 63, Mukhles, 32, Shamim, 40, Arif, 31, Rana, 25, Aminul, 37, Abdur Rashid (55), Faizul, 50, Monir, 29, Shaheen, 40, Hadis, 50, and Kamrul, 29. They are all residents of Bhatiya Mirpara village in Karimganj upazila. Among them, 12 were present in court, while Kamrul remains absconding.

According to case statement, a land boundary dispute between Ain Uddin and convicts Faizul and Hadis had been ongoing in Karimganj’s Bhatiya Mirpara village. On April 10, 2020, Ain Uddin went to the disputed land to settle the boundary but got into an argument with the accused, who then threatened him. Shortly after, his elder brother Monir Mia was returning home when the accused surrounded him and launched a brutal attack with local weapons. They hacked and beat him severely. When Ain Uddin and others rushed to help, they were also attacked. Locals rescued the injured and took them to a hospital. Monir was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died the next day while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, Ain Uddin filed a murder case with Karimganj police station on April 12, 2020, naming 14 accused. After investigation, then-investigating officer Inspector Nahid Hasan Sumon submitted a charge sheet against 13 accused on September 30, 2020.

Kishoreganj Judge Court's Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Jalal Uddin confirmed the matter.
