BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman described Shaheed Asad as an unforgettable figure in Bengali’s movement for autonomy and democracy.
In a message marking Shaheed Asad Day, Rahman highlighted Asad’s fearless sacrifice, saying that he laid down his life on the streets to liberate democracy from military rule.
He added that Asad’s martyrdom hastened the fall of the dictatorship, ultimately securing the democratic rights of the people.
The BNP’s acting chairman paid rich tributes to the memory of Shaheed Asaduzzaman in the 1969 mass uprising and prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul.
“Martyr Asad's sacrifice for democracy has inspired us in various movements and struggles in the next days. In such a situation, on this day, I consider protecting independence and sovereignty, ensuring people's freedom and strengthening democracy to be the most urgent task."
He called upon the countrymen to work unitedly to restore democracy.
Shaheed Asad Day is being observed today, commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the student leader.
On January 20 in 1969, Asaduzzaman Asad, the hero of the 1969 mass upsurge movement, was killed by the Pakistani police at a protest against the atrocities on the people of East Pakistan at a rally near Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
