KUET students demand VC’s resignation amid protest

General students of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) have issued a five-point demand, including the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor, and Director of Student Affairs, following alleged administrative failure over an attack on students.

They made the demands during a press briefing at KUET on Tuesday (February 18) night.

They warned that if their demands were not met by Wednesday (February 19) at 1:00 pm, all academic activities, including classes and examinations, would be suspended.

In a written statement, the students alleged that members of the Chhatra Dal and local BNP leaders orchestrated a violent attack on them. They demanded legal action against those involved, including students and faculty who allegedly provided support, through cases of attempted murder and sabotage.

Besides, they called for expulsion and cancellation of student status for those responsible.

The students also demanded that all KUET students, faculty, and staff remain detached from any political activities inside or outside the university.

Violators should face lifetime expulsion or student status cancellation, they added.

They also urged the deployment of military personnel outside the campus to ensure student safety until February 28. They also insisted that KUET administration bear all medical expenses of the injured students.

The unrest followed violent clashes on Tuesday between student groups over the demand to ban student politics on campus.

The situation escalated as BNP activists joined Chhatra Dal members, while members of the anti-discrimination student movement were supported by Shibir activists. The confrontation lasted for about three hours, leaving at least 50 people injured.
