Virat Kohli’s masterful unbeaten century guided India to a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in their ICC Champions Trophy group-stage clash on Sunday, leaving the defending champions on the brink of elimination.
Chasing 242, India comfortably reached the target with 45 balls to spare, thanks to Kohli’s composed 100* off 111 deliveries. His innings, studded with seven boundaries, anchored the chase, ensuring a smooth finish for the team.
India started strong with Rohit Sharma’s brisk 20 before Shubman Gill (46) and Shreyas Iyer (56) added crucial contributions. Despite Pakistan’s efforts, including two wickets from Shaheen Afridi, Kohli remained unshaken and guided India home. His century also saw him surpass 14,000 runs in ODIs, further cementing his legacy in international cricket.
Earlier, India’s disciplined bowling attack kept Pakistan in check, restricting them to 241 in 49.4 overs at the Dubai International Stadium. Pakistan struggled to maintain partnerships, losing wickets at crucial junctures.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan lost captain Babar Azam early for 23, caught behind off Hardik Pandya. Imam-ul-Haq (10) followed soon after via a run-out, leaving them struggling at 47/2 in the first 10 overs. Saud Shakeel (62) and Mohammad Rizwan (46) steadied the innings with a 104-run stand, but India’s bowlers struck back swiftly.
Kuldeep Yadav (3/40) was India’s standout bowler, removing key middle-order batters, while Pandya (2/31) and Harshit Rana (1/30) provided vital breakthroughs. Pakistan’s lower order failed to accelerate, losing their last five wickets for just 41 runs.
With this win, India strengthened their semi-final hopes, while Pakistan now rely on other results to keep their campaign alive.
