Sarjis Alam quits July Shaheed Smrity Foundation

Sarjis Alam has resigned as the general secretary of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, an organization supporting victims of last year’s uprising.

He cited time constraints and the need to improve the foundation’s operational efficiency as reasons behind it.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sarjis, a key figure in the July-August 2024 mass uprising, said that he had ceased working with the foundation at the end of last year and officially handed over responsibilities on January 7.

He also noted that the foundation’s structure has been updated, with the CEO now responsible for executing tasks while the governing body focuses on policy-making.

The current CEO is Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, brother of uprising martyr Mir Mugdho, while the governing body comprises Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and four other interim government advisers.

Until 31 December, the Foundation had provided donations to families of 628 of the total 826 martyrs, and to 2,000 of the total 11,000 injured in the uprising.

In his facebook post, Sarjis highlighted his decision to step down as “an act of bravery,” rather than a show of “weakness.” It requires honesty and courage to face one’s limitations and make tough choices, the student protest leader claimed.
