Bangladesh Army said that recent activities, including worker protests, student movements, and the killing of a lawyer in Chattogram, have been fueled by third parties or identified criminals.
The military also mentioned that efforts are underway to identify and bring those responsible for creating unrest to justice.
Colonel Intekhab Haider Khan on Thursday (Nov 28), briefed the media about the army's activities under the "In Aid to Civil Power" operation at the Officers' Mess in Banani.
At this time he revealed that since November 13, the army has arrested 1,328 individuals, including 228 drug dealers, in connection with various unwanted incidents. Additionally, in the past two weeks, 24 firearms and 365 rounds of ammunition were seized. During these operations, 123 army personnel were injured, and one soldier lost their life.
Colonel Haider Khan also mentioned that the army is working to maintain peace among the hill communities in Chattogram. A crackdown on the Kuki-Chin group has resulted in the arrest of 179 active members, and seven army personnel were killed during this operation.
In response to a question about the army's readiness to maintain law and order in Chattogram's court, Colonel Haider Khan said that all law enforcement agencies were prepared, which helped prevent a major disaster. He noted that although an incident occurred, it could have been much worse.
Colonel Haider Khan also addressed the student and worker movements, identifying three main groups involved. One group consists of identified criminals, who are intentionally causing unrest, while another group includes the general public, such as the garment workers protesting.
He emphasized that students have historically been a driving force for change, but some students are now being influenced by others and may not fully understand the situation. In such cases, the army must approach the situation carefully.
The army official expressed hope that students, workers, and the general public would reflect on the country's future and their roles in shaping it. He urged everyone to act responsibly to avoid unnecessary violence, stating that peaceful protests are possible and that, by acting with responsibility, many such incidents can be prevented.
