RMG export rises 17% in July-Aug

DHAKA: Earnings from exports of readymade garments increased by nearly 17 percent year-on-year during the first two months of the current financial year beginning July 1, 2013, according to the data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
 
In July-August 2013 period, knitwear exports fetched US$ 2.101 billion for Bangladesh, showing a rise of 17.19 percent over exports worth US$ 1.793 billion made during the corresponding period of last year.
 
Similarly, exports of woven apparel earned US$ 2.058 billion for Bangladesh during the two-month period, registering an increase of 16.98 percent compared to exports of US$ 1.759 billion made during the same period last year.
 
Meanwhile, exports of home textiles declined 15.56 percent year-on-year to US$ 116.91 million during the period under review.
 
Exports of specialized textiles, including terry towel, and woven and knitted fabrics, grew 1.63 percent year-on-year to US$ 20.6 million in July-August 2013, the data showed.
 
Man-made filaments and staple fibres exports dropped 13.73 percent year-on-year to US$ 14.01 million during the period under discussion.
 
In financial year 2012-13, the exports of readymade garments earned US$ 21.515 billion in foreign exchange for Bangladesh, showing an increase of about 12.7 percent over exports of US$ 19.089 billion made during the corresponding period of 2011-12.
