French families sue TikTok over alleged role in teen suicides

Seven families in France filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging that the platform’s failure to remove harmful content contributed to the suicides of two 15-year-old teens, their lawyer said Monday.

The lawsuit, filed in Creteil judicial court, claims TikTok’s algorithm exposed seven teens to content promoting suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders, according to Laure Boutron-Marmion, the families' lawyer, reported France 24.

Speaking to Franceinfo, Boutron-Marmion said this is Europe’s first collective lawsuit against TikTok over alleged harm to minors.

“The parents want TikTok’s legal liability to be recognized,” she said. “This is a commercial company offering a product to consumers, who are, in addition, minors. They must answer for the product’s shortcomings.”

The lawsuit adds to TikTok’s growing legal challenges amid increased scrutiny of social media’s impact on mental health.

In the US, TikTok, alongside Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, faces lawsuits claiming the platforms are addictive for young users and harmful to their mental health.

TikTok was not immediately available for comment but has previously stated its commitment to young users' mental well-being. Earlier this year, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew told US lawmakers that the company has invested in protective measures for younger audiences.
