As many as 43 eye patients were operated upon for free at Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) in the capital on Thursday (April 25).

Of them, 23 were women and 20 others men. Many of them were suffering from cataract problem, while others were suffering from pterygium, a benign growth of the conjunctiva.  

Under the supervision of BEHRI Director Prof Dr Saleh Ahmed, a group of ophthalmologists including Dr Anthony Albert, Dr Mozumder Golam Rabbi and Dr Tasruba Shahnaz conducted the surgery.

Earlier, 423 patients were selected for surgery based on their ophthalmic problems at a recent free medical camp jointly organised by BEHRI, an ophthalmic initiative of the country’s leading business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, Vision Care Foundation, and Chikitsa Sahayata Kendra Chapainawabganj. Of them, 43 patients underwent surgery in first batch, while rest others will be operated upon in phases.

Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed said that the Bashundhara Eye Hospital in association with the local partners organised the eye camp on the premises of Krishna Gobindapur Degree College recently.

“Some 1,200 people received eye treatment at free of cost, while patients with severe problems in eye were selected for surgery,” he said.

The BEHRI Manager, Mohammad Ahsan Habib, said that more than 3,000 patients have so far got free eye surgery at the hospital.

He also stated that Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute is providing treatment to affluent patients at affordable costs.

Chikitsa Sahayata Kendra Chapainawabganj General Secretary Aminul Islam said that the voluntary platform organises two eye camps each year to provide free eye treatment to under-privileged people. 

“We have served over 8,000 people since our partnership with BEHRI and Vision Care Foundation in 2019,” he said.
