The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed for six weeks a High Court order that halted the trial proceedings of a drug case filed against film actress Shamsunnahar Smriti, popularly known as Pori Moni.

Justice Obaidul Hassan, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, passed the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition filed by the state against the High Court order.

Now there is no bar for the trial court concerned to continue the proceedings of the case following the Chamber Judge’s order, said Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath who appeared in the hearing for the state.

The government on Monday petitioned in the Appellate Division for staying the HC decision.

On March 1, the High Court stayed Pori Moni’s trial for six weeks asking the government and the CID to explain in four weeks why the proceedings against Pori Moni should not be quashed.

The HC had issued the ruling after hearing a petition filed by Pori Moni for quashing proceedings against her.

Pori Moni filed a petition with the High Court challenging the lower court’s January 5 order of framing charges against Pori Moni and her two associates — Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain — in the case.
