Govt undertakes Tk 47cr project to dredge Feni River

DHAKA: The government has undertaken a project involving Tk 47 crore to prevent river erosion and dredging of Feni River.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has taken this initiative under the project 'Protecting Nangal Mora and Jagatjibanpur areas under Chhagalnaiya and Sadar upazilas' of Feni from erosion.

According to the sources, under the project, the Nangal Mora of Chhagalnaiya Upazila and Jagatjibanpur area of Feni Sadar upazila will be protected from the erosion of the Feni river.

At the same time, the government has an aim to build Jagatjibanpur of Sadar upazila and Nangal Mora of Chhagalnaiya upazila in Feni as a flood-free sate area.

Besides, dredging will be done to prevent erosion as well as change of course of the Feni River.

With the implementation of the project in Feni, about $ 387.5 crore worth of resources will be protected.

The Ministry of Water Resources said the project will reduce poverty, improve living conditions and create employment opportunities by ensuring stable and sustainable agriculture.

In addition, the socio-economic development including social security of the area will be continued and the environment of the project area will be protected from adverse effects. The BWDB will implement the project from this year to June, 2021.

Mantu Kumar Biswas, joint head of the Water Resources Ministry (Planning Department), told Banglanews that dredging in the river is necessary to prevent the Feni river erosion as well as change the course of the river. As a result, it will be easier to protect the banks of Feni.

According to the ministry, Planning Minister MA Mannan has already approved the project as the cost of the project is less than Tk 50 crore. After completion of some formalities, the project work will start soon.
